Hi. My name is Herine Chin. I'm a Software Engineer by day and a "dog janitor" by night.
Color My Frenchie was inspired by countless hours conversing about and explaining French Bulldog coat genetics with many folks in the breeding community. It became apparent that this was a difficult subject for several reasons, basic genetics isn't common knowledge, the haphazard use of names to describe specific genetics, toss in something like 'non-testable chocolate' and it was a recipe for confusion.
As a French Bulldog breeder myself, I remember the questions I had, and the learning curve I experienced. It just made sense to combine my past learnings from breeding ball pythons (there are HUNDREDS of mutations and no DNA tests), my day job, and my love of French Bulldogs to make something beneficial for the breeding community.
While pioneering Isabellas (bb, dd) in the US with our stud, Hershey Bar, I made several diagrams to educate and to distinguish this particular color from Lilacs. You may have seen these diagrams floating around. I was excited to see how helpful the infographics had been so I decided to take it to the next level with an app.
The prototype for this app was made in 2018. Since then new loci were added, the interface redesigned, and several features added with the goal of education in mind. I am constantly refining it with new findings and looking for ways to make ingesting the information easier. It's too easy to overwhelm with lots of numbers and not enough context.
